The Book of Luke – the teachings of Christ

The Book of Luke – the teachings of Christ

Course objectives

We will carefully walk through the book of Luke to glean from it the teachings of Christ.  As adult Christians, ours is a master class, so let us study at the feet of the Master and Savior Himself for our education.

Course Methods

Luke Journals (“journibles”)

My son, keep my words, And treasure my commands within you. Keep my commands and live, And my law as the apple of your eye. Bind them on your fingers; Write them on the tablet of your heart. Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” And call understanding your nearest kin,” – Proverbs 7:1–4 (NKJV)

We shall copy the book of Luke verse by verse every week into the Luke journal book (of course you can just copy on regular paper and make your notes to the side).

To begin, we will copy about 21 verses a week.

Here are some suggestions, your mileage may vary:

  • Copy all 21 verses on Friday night or Copy 3 verses a day
    • Meditate on the verses, analyze and study them.
      • Write down your thoughts throughout the day, or at the end of the day, in the left hand side of your Luke journal.
      • Come to class prepared to share your insights.  After all, iron sharpens iron.

1st Thursdays – Singing and Scripture reading

Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” – Colossians 3:16 (NKJV)

Naturally, we will continue our custom of having a singing on the first Thursday of the month.

Please note the songs that reenforce the teachings you find in Luke as you walk through it.  We will be singing these songs on the 1st Thursdays.  Of course, if you needed to hear “It is well with my soul”, for instance, we who desire to build one another are pleased to do so.  This is just a guideline to further our study of the gospel of Luke.

If you find a song that is not known and you want me to lead it, feel free to let me know a week ahead of time.  I will try to learn it for you, even if it isn’t in our book.  We may be able to find a way to make that happen.

Scripture Reading

Paul to Timothy an evangelist:

Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching.

– 1 Timothy 4:13 (NASB)

I will read all of the verses we have copied since the last singing as the scripture reading portion of that service.  The text itself will dictate how I will read it (in sections with breaks, or all through); so we may sing in between readings or afterward.
